Healing Through Art
|
Sometimes art helps when words are hard.
At Monroe-Walton Center for the Arts, we believe creativity can do more than inspire. It can comfort. It can connect. It can help people communicate, process difficult experiences, and find moments of calm during hard seasons. Through our Healing Arts programs, MWCA provides free or reduced-cost creative support for children, adults, and families navigating grief, illness, disability, trauma, anxiety, communication challenges, and other difficult life circumstances. ArtReach in the Community
ArtReach also extends beyond our regular weekly classes through partnerships with organizations serving adults and young adults with developmental disabilities. Students from the Walton County Horizons Transition Program are participating in painting classes with Eileen, giving them opportunities to create, learn new skills, build confidence, and enjoy time together in a welcoming art environment. We also welcome participants from Exceptional Community Services, Inc. (ECS) twice each month. ECS serves adults with developmental disabilities in both Monroe and Conyers, helping individuals build independence, maintain community connections, and access supportive services. These partner classes are offered at a significantly reduced rate, with MWCA helping absorb part of the cost through our Healing Arts funding. For us, this is another important part of Art for All — making sure people with disabilities have meaningful opportunities to create, connect, and participate fully in their community. |
ArtReach
ArtReach provides weekly creative classes for special-needs young adults, offering far more than art instruction. Students build confidence, friendships, routine, independence, and a sense of belonging — all in a welcoming place where they can simply be themselves. What Families Are Telling Us About ArtReach
For many of our ArtReach students, this class is much more than an art activity. Families tell us that their young adults look forward to class all week, feel proud of what they create, build friendships, grow in confidence, and become more willing to try new things. Several parents described ArtReach as one of the few places their adult children can go after high school where they feel completely accepted, included, and part of the community. Again and again, we heard the same themes: belonging, independence, friendship, confidence, purpose, and joy. One parent shared that before ArtReach, their daughter “didn’t have any activity to look forward to.” Now she talks about class and her friends for days afterward. Another told us that ArtReach gives her daughter “a special place to go where she is always welcomed and respected for exactly who she is.” A parent of another student described the impact this way:
And perhaps one parent summed it up best:
For families of adults with disabilities, opportunities like this can be surprisingly hard to find. ArtReach gives our students a place to create, learn, laugh, connect, and simply be themselves — while giving their families the joy of seeing them thrive. |

Artistic Shelter
Our grief and loss support program is offered completely free-of-charge and uses art and creativity as gentle tools for reflection, grounding, connection, and emotional support. Sometimes making something with your hands creates space for feelings that are difficult to explain. What Participants Are Telling Us About Artistic Shelter
Participants consistently tell us that the creative activities help them process feelings that are difficult to put into words, leave them with practical coping tools, and — perhaps most importantly — help them feel less alone. One participant described it as:
Others spoke about the comfort of being with people who understand loss, the friendships they’ve formed, and the relief of having a place where talking about a loved one is not only accepted, but welcomed. One participant told us:
Again and again, participants described the same things: support, friendship, fellowship, creativity, and the comfort of knowing they are not grieving alone. That is what Artistic Shelter is meant to be — a gentle place to gather, create, remember, and heal alongside others who understand. |

Therapeutic Art Services
Therapeutic Art Services help children, teens, and adults work through anxiety, grief, relationships, frightening experiences, life transitions, and other challenges. For some participants, art becomes a bridge when spoken words are difficult. It can help someone identify feelings, reflect on what happened, find language for an experience, and communicate in ways that feel safer and more manageable. Therapeutic Arts services are provided by Gracy Bondy, a Certified Therapeutic Arts Practitioner and human services professional with nearly two decades of experience supporting trauma-affected children, adults, and families. Her work is strengths-based, relational, and trauma-informed, using creative and nature-based approaches to support communication, coping, reflection, and growth. These services are non-clinical and do not include psychotherapy, diagnosis, or mental health treatment. A parent's testimonial ...
I’ve seen the value of this work through my granddaughter. Because language can be difficult for her, therapeutic art gives her another way to work through worries and frightening experiences, including her seizures. Gracy helps her find words for what she is feeling and has even helped her write letters to me when talking face-to-face felt too hard. |
